Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation

Stroke Rehabilitation
A stroke occurs when inadequate blood flow and nutrition reaches the brain. This can occur with either hemorrhage or a blood clot. The resulting damage can range from mild to severe and can involve all areas of the body, depending on the area of the brain affected. Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in Ontario and the Canadian Institute for Health Information reports a shortage of both in-patient and out-patient services. (Ontario Physiotherapy Association)
Stroke rehabilitation, more specifically, physiotherapy for stroke leads to reduced mortality and increased function. Evidence has also indicated that the more time a patient post stroke spends in physiotherapy, the greater their functional outcomes. At Performance Physiotherapy and Wellness we provide individualized stroke rehabilitation programs to the Brampton and Caledon community. Our stroke rehabilitation physiotherapists assess all areas of possible disability including sensory, motor, co-ordination and balance deficits. Our patients receive one on one care with the physiotherapist for a full hour. We are passionate about returning patients to their fullest functional potential post stroke, and work hard to provide up to date evidence-based physical therapy for stroke rehabilitation.

What to Expect From Your Neurological Rehabilitation Visit
An initial assessment involving all areas of dysfunction is completed. This will include motor, sensory, reflex, balance, co-ordination, tone/spasticity, posture and gait analysis to ensure your condition is accurately and comprehensively treated.
The physiotherapist will conduct baseline measures of balance, strength, sensation, co-ordination and function to help set goals and follow over the course of treatment to monitor progress.
You and the physiotherapist will develop goals most important to you and the physiotherapist will set an individualized treatment plan that they feel will maximize your recovery.
Intervention may consist of manual/hands on therapeutic techniques, sensitization techniques, modalities to help with pain, repetitive movement/cueing to help the brain re-learn proper movement patterns, exercises to improve gait, balance, functional reach/arm movements and endurance.
Your appointment will be one-on-one with the physiotherapist for either half an hour or one hour.
Please feel free to contact us, should you have any further questions about the rehabilitation process.
